Few software companies can trace their roots directly from the entertainment business, and this is especially true of those specializing in Supply Chain Management. WebConcepts is a notable exception.  Their highly regarded VMI/Replenishment solution, eVMI, was designed to meet specific challenges faced by home entertainment media firms.  Company founder Ray Young is especially happy to claim this heritage.  “I’ve been in IT management and development for a long time, in several industry environments, and in my experience home entertainment is the sector that really pushes the envelope for SCM.  We designed eVMI to meet these challenges head on.”

Frank LoVerme is Sr. VP of Business Development at Kestrel Wireless. He has held executive positions at Deluxe Media Services, Ritek Global Media and Warner Advanced Media Operations (WAMO) - - where he helped launch the DVD format.  He earned an MBA in Management at Pepperdine University.

Presentation Overview:

Protected DVDs and Consumer Electronics are Activated at the POS
Kestrel Wireless, a company founded by former studio, credit card transaction and DVD replication executives, has developed technology that, when embedded in DVDs, prevents DVD playback until the item is paid for at the POS.

Starting next year retailers will begin to use Kestrel’s RF Activation™ (RFA) to eliminate supply chain and retail theft of DVDs (and also electrically powered products such tools, TVs and cameras) by specifying that vendors ship their products in a disabled state.

William J. Henderson joined Netflix in January 2005 as chief operations officer after serving as the United States Postal Service (USPS) postmaster general and chief executive officer from 1998 until his retirement in 2001. Before he was promoted to the post office’s highest position, he served as the USPS’s chief operating officer 1994-98 and earlier held postal management positions in Chicago; Greensboro, N.C.; Memphis; and Stockton, Calif., gaining experience in labor relations, human resources and line management.

Keynoting at the Entertainment Supply Chain Academy (ESCA) inaugural event, Henderson explains in a quick chat what drew him to the private sector, and the similarities he sees between the world's largest online DVD rental service and most sophisticated postal service.

Q: What attracted you to Netflix after a career in the postal system?
A: My experience with complex automated plants combined with my curiosity about DVD delivery via the Internet and USPS were an ideal combination.  (Netflix CEO) Reed Hastings called me and we discussed the opportunity.  It was a match based on my experience and curiosity factors.

Q: Were you a Netflix customer before you joined the company?
A: I started my Netflix membership early on – about 2001. I found it by word of mouth. A friend of mine told me it “was the coolest thing in the world.” I signed up right away. My experience is quite common. More than 90 percent of Netflix members say they refer Netflix to a friend. More than 85 percent of Netflix members say they joined in part because of a personal recommendation from a friend.

Q: Are advances in technology keeping pace with Netflix’s growth?
A: The selection and deployment of automation as Netflix grows. Today we have 4.9 million members. Our goal is to have 20 million members by 2010-2012.

The days of making a decent profit off manufacturing an optical disc are long gone, as replication veterans well know.

Shrinking margins, intense price competition and substantially higher raw material costs have led replicators—those who have survived—to search for new sources of revenue. Servicing customers’ complete supply chain needs is absolutely required in this day and age.

The Entertainment Supply Chain Academy (ESCA) was formed with such challenges in mind. ESCA’s inaugural event June 20-21 at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza will provide attendees with the latest developments in maximizing the efficiency of physical media manufacturing and distribution – and for leading replicators it is an overview of a new business model.
